Speaking louder won’t make people listen, we live in a world where now, those who are loudest are heard, which is not true for the most part, it is only true if it is convenient to however is listening.
Because now, all that matters is how many people are reached.
From Instagram to Twitter, and these are great platforms – stories of police brutality that are racially motivated, in the US, reach the world. We, the so-called millennials, are tired of BS, we are tired of being blamed for the older generations’ mistakes, especially for what they did wrong. If we are in a toxic relationship we can easily identify it and try to get out, women are speaking out more and more everyday about the injustices that we face, people are starting to be accountable for crimes against people of colour – for shaming them, for accusing them of robbery because of the colour of their skin, because of their background…
As if human worth is measured by the colour of our skin.
I’m eastern European, and I have been targeted, sometimes when I’m in a store and I’m speaking to a relative in my mother tongue, as soon as a worker hears me, I’ll have someone following me right away, checking what I touch and everything I do. I remember being in a buji store and I couldn’t find my size in a dress, so I asked the employee, that was clearly following me, if they had it and their response was ‘Why would I try to find it for you if you can’t afford it either way, its not like you’re going to buy it’ – well on the bright side at least they didn’t pretend they didn’t hear me, yes that has happened.
Now, I know this is a small portion of what happens to people that speak a language that the locals don’t understand, people with a skin colour that is not white, people whose eyes are shaped a little differently, people who wear a hijab… people nevertheless, flesh and bones, heart and soul – treat everyone as a human being. You cannot categorise millions for what one person has done.
Those who want to listen to you will hear you regardless of how loud you speak.
